People keep saying it’s raining. But obviously it’s not, since I’m dry. I don’t know why I’m even carrying this stupid umbrella.
Two children* have died from measles in Texas. Measles is a highly infectious and deadly disease all but eradicated in the U.S. by the invention of vaccines. And having all but eradicated it, some of us have started to wonder why we should continue vaccinating ourselves. There are currently 124 known cases. This would be a big Darwin Award style shrug if the victims of measles weren’t usually children who have little say about being vaccinated or not. A small percentage of victims of preventable diseases can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons and generally rely on herd immunity for protection. They are also faultless. The U.S. is good at lots of stuff. Some of which includes:
• Vaccines.
• Landing on the Moon.
• Undercutting our own accomplishments by denying their efficacy or their existence.
• Punching ourselves in the face.
And so we’re in the FO phase of FAFO. The deepest and most stupid irony is that the parents that refuse to vaccinate their children are almost always vaccinated themselves.
After all, I’m dry, why should I keep holding this stupid umbrella over my kid?
*There’s some confusion whether it’s two victims or one so far. BBC said two. RFK Jr. said two, but the NYTimes is reporting just one. If the CDC was functioning properly, maybe we’d know. But it’s not. Punch meet face.
Got Measles?
An idea I had for a bumper sticker. Kinda dark.
I have no words. I'm glad you wield yours so damn well.
