According to the scientists
There was once a moon.
It lifted nightly and glowed with the reflected light of the sun.
It must have been something to see.
A glowing orb, a planet sized star, rolling light across black sky
It’s easy to imagine
the people of early earth worshipping this mysterious globe.
And thanking it for its glow,
and company
during the dark.
Did they ever want to visit the moon?
Or did they consider it just another miracle.
It must have been something to see.
But only if they ever thought to see it.
I consider our own heavens
and our own fading sun
as darkness, which was a memory
creeps back into the places
where the nevernight lanterns start to flicker and dim.
Will we too look up and wonder at our own bright miracle, gone,
and think,
It must have been something to see.
